Teacher perceptions of low socioeconomic student performances

Many students categorized as low socioeconomic tend to underperform in their academics. Factors contributing to student underperformance include lack of resources, exposures such as gangs and drugs that astray students from focusing on academics, lack of education from the parents, and more. Although these challenges continue to impact many lives, this study is designed to uncover the daily experiences of students living in a low-income household. The purpose of this study is to explore underprivileged and low socioeconomic status students’ performances in a school system. More specifically, this study will focus on teacher perceptions of students who meet the criteria of low SES (Low-SES refers to individuals coming from a low household income). The quantitative survey results from teacher perceptions offer insights about the resources available, or lack thereof, for students living in a low-income household. This study will be conducted with teachers who work at a Title 1 school where the majority of the surrounding community is low-SES.

Math Anxiety in First Grade Students

There is increasing evidence that individuals can experience math anxiety as early as first grade (Ma, 1999, as cited in Sorvo, 2017). Research has examined the causes of math anxiety and the emotional and physiological effects of math anxiety. However, the research focuses primarily on adolescents and adults. The purpose of this study is to fill in the gaps of literature by conducting more research on math anxiety in young students. The study seeks to determine if – and to what extent – do first grade students experience math anxiety. The researcher will examine the differences in math anxiety amongst first grade students by evaluating three factors: negative reactions, numerical confidence, and worry. A group of first grade students completed the Mathematics Anxiety Scale for Young Children Revised (MASYC-R) to measure these three factors and the students’ level of math anxiety. The anticipated results of the study are that first grade students experience mild to moderate levels of math anxiety. The researcher anticipates that students with high levels of numerical confidence experience fewer negative reactions and less worry towards mathematics. Lastly, the researcher anticipates that students experience similar levels of negative reactions and worry related to mathematics.
