La escritora uruguaya Delmira Agustini es considerada la primera mujer en la poesía hispana que representa el cuerpo femenino en su escritura. También es la primera mujer que rompe con las expectativas hacia las mujeres, tanto del lenguaje como de las convenciones, a través de la representación de los cuerpos de las mujeres y el amor sexual, que a menudo incluye el erotismo y su propio cuerpo como centro de su poesía.
En “Otro linaje” de Los cálices vacíos y “El intruso” de El libro blanco (Frágil) de Agustini, ella emplea y desarrolla alusiones y símbolos originalmente presentados en el mito romano “Cupido y Psique” incluidos en La metamorfosis de Lucio Apuleyo. Dos ejemplos de estas alusiones y símbolos incluyen la profecía de Apolo que se refiere a Cupido como un monstruo y la transformación de Psique en diosa y madre. A través del estilo de narración en primera persona, en su poesía, Agustini utiliza a Psique para desarrollar momentos y sentimientos no transmitidos previamente en el mito y sus traducciones. Al igual que Agustini, estos momentos y sentimientos adicionales incorporados en la poesía desafían las normas sociales impuestas contra las mujeres y el sexo. Además, sus poemas, se diferencian del mito en que Eros es el principal interés amoroso en lugar de Cupido porque ella desea el amor asociado con Eros.

The Uruguayan writer, Delmira Agustini, is considered the first woman in Hispanic poetry to represent the woman’s body in her writing. She is also the first woman to break away from the expectations of women, both language and conventions, through the representation of women’s bodies and sexual love, which often includes eroticism and her own body as her poetry’s center.
In Agustini’s “Another Lineage” from The Empty Chalices and “The Intruder” from The White Book (Fragile), she employs and develops references and symbols originally featured inthe Roman myth “Cupid and Psyche” included in Lucius Apuleius’ Metamorphoses. Two examples of these references and symbols include the prophecy by Apollo referring to Cupid as a monster and Psyche’s transformation as a goddess and mother. Through the first-person narration style, in Agustini’s poetry, she uses Psyche to develop moments and sentiments not previously conveyed in the myth and its translations. Like Agustini, these additional momentsand sentiments incorporated in the poetry challenge the imposed social norms against women and sex. Additionally, in her poems, she differs from the myth by having Eros be the main love interest instead of Cupid because she desires the love associated with Eros.

The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. Although they are neighbors, there is a division between both countries. In the Dominican Republic there is an existing racial discrimination toward the Haitians. Dominicans believe they are above Haitians, although they have the same skin colors. Dominicans believe themselves to be of Spanish descent and Haitians are of African descent. This discrimination has affected the way Haitians live in the Dominican Republic. Dominican children are taught to discriminate in their homes and in schools. 
In this paper I discuss how the racial discrimination has affected the education children receive  in the Dominican Republic. I go further into discussing how the education system has failed giving students the proper education on race. The education system has not updated its curriculum;  therefore they are implementing ideals that are old to the current generations. The curriculum teaches students the justifications of racial discrimination that exist between Dominicans and Haitians. Textbooks used in classrooms depict pictures that belittle those of darker skin tones and praise those with lighter skin tones. I briefly touch on the importance textbooks have on children’s education and how it affects their learning. Overall, there needs to be changes in the education system in order to teach the students to be inclusive and not discriminate against Haitians.
 
 

La República Dominicana comparte la isla Hispaniola con Haití. Aunque son vecinos existe una división entre ambos países. En República Dominicana existe una discriminación racial hacia los haitianos. Los dominicanos creen estar por encima de los haitianos, aunque tienen el mismo color de piel. Los dominicanos se creen descendientes de españoles y los haitianos son descendientes de africanos. Esta discriminación ha afectado la forma de vida de los haitianos en República Dominicana. A los niños dominicanos se les enseña a discriminar en sus hogares y en las escuelas.
En este artículo discuto cómo la discriminación racial ha afectado la educación que reciben los niños en la República Dominicana. Voy más allá al discutir cómo el sistema educativo ha fallado en brindar a los estudiantes la educación adecuada sobre la raza. El sistema educativo no ha actualizado su currículo; por lo tanto, están implementando ideales que son antiguos para las generaciones actuales. El plan de estudios enseña a los estudiantes las justificaciones de la discriminación racial que existe entre dominicanos y haitianos. Los libros de texto utilizados en las aulas muestran imágenes que menosprecian a las personas con tonos de piel más oscuros y elogian a las personas con tonos de piel más claros. Me refiero brevemente a la importancia que tienen los libros de texto en la educación de los niños y cómo afecta su aprendizaje. En general, es necesario que haya cambios en el sistema educativo para enseñar a los estudiantes a ser inclusivos y no discriminar a los haitianos.
 

While studying at Oxford University with Professor Peter Davidson, I had the opportunity to engage in transdisciplinary research on the Rückenfigur (literally a “back figure”) in Romantic Era landscape art and poetry. This research topic resulted in some of my strongest work and has given my scholarship a focus and passion that I will continue in graduate school. I used a methodological mixture of art history and literary analysis to examine how the Rückenfigur presents the perspective of a person as seen from behind, usually viewing a landscape before them. It is a device that also has been applied to the poetry of the period. In nineteenth-century landscape art, the Rückenfigur(en) perspective reveals how the landscape is perceived by the viewer. The number of Rückenfiguren and their clarity and detail all affect that perception. A Rückenfigur is usually a wanderer or a traveler and their identity as such adds to the uncertainty of their existence and the existence of the landscape they observe, which is an important aspect of German Romantic literature and art. In poetry, the wanderer as a narrator can serve as a Rückenfigur to help the reader see the landscape by proxy. In landscapes, the Rückenfigur visually imposes this perspective on the viewer. Overall, the Rückenfigur is a very effective tool for influencing an audience’s experience of a landscape, whether visual or poetic.

La novelista, poeta y crítica literaria afro-puertorriqueña, Mayra Santos-Febres, es reconocida internacionalmente y premiada por sus contribuciones literarias que abordan temas como el género, la identidad, la sexualidad y la raza. Sus contribuciones a la literatura latinoamericana también se han prestado a su trabajo como activista cultural.
 
La novela Sirena Selena vestida de pena de Santos-Febres, trata de la transformación  de un niño de quince años,  pobre, en Sirena Selena después de ser tomado bajo el amparo de la draga, Martha Divine. Este ensayo se centrará principalmente en cómo Santos-Febres desarrolla la noción de que las mujeres transgénero deben ser consideradas mujeres a través del concepto de performatividad de género. Dentro de la novela, esta teoría es vista a través de las representaciones de personajes trans como Valentina Frenesí, Martha Divine y Sirena Selena, quienes demuestran las elecciones estilísticas repetitivas de estas mujeres para adherirse a los estereotipos femeninos. Sin embargo, Santos-Febres  va más allá de las características físicas al demostrar las complejas relaciones personales que Valentina y Martha mantienen con Sirena Selena y que son similares a los  roles típicamente asociados con el género femenino.

The Afro-Puerto-Rican novelist, poet, and literary critic, Mayra Santos-Febres, is internationally renowned and awarded for her literary contributions depicting themes such as gender, identity, sexuality, and race. Her contributions to Latin American literature have also lent themselves to her work as a cultural activist. 
The work that will be discussed is Santos-Febres’s Sirena Selena vestida de pena, which illustrates the holistic transformation of a poor fifteen-year-old boy into Sirena Selena after Martha Divine, a drag queen in Puerto Rico, takes him under her wing. This paper will primarily focus on how Santos-Febres develops the notion that transgender women should be considered women through the concept of gender performance. Within the novel, she demonstrates this gender theory through the depictions of the prominent trans characters of Valentina Frenesi, Martha Divine, and Sirena Selena, who exemplify the repetitive stylistic choices of these women to adhere to feminine stereotypes. However, Santos-Febres delves deeper than just the physical characteristics by demonstrating the complex personal relationships that Valentina and Martha foster with Sirena Selena, that are typically associated with roles of the female gender.
